76ers' next move is obvious after latest playoff failure

The Philadelphia 76ers were swept by the New York Knicks, and it is clear they have to fire head coach Nick Nurse after their latest disappointment. Philly won one playoff series in three years under Nurse. He is clearly not the right man to lead this team. Nurse loves to play his best player massive minutes, and it is wearing down Tyrese Maxey for the most important moments.

Nurse was rumored to be under pressure (subscription required) when they fell behind 3-1 in the Boston series. The Sixers shockingly came back to defeat the Celtics, but were dominated by the Knicks. Nurse is not the man to lead this team on a deep playoff run, despite winning a title with the Raptors in 2019. Philadelphia has to move on.

The 76ers want to be a serious title contender. Nurse has made the playoffs just three times in the last six years. He hadn’t won a playoff series since 2020 before Philly knocked out Boston in the first round. The high of that victory was immediately squashed by the Knicks. The Sixers just can’t bring Nurse back if they want to take the next step.

The 76ers have to fire Nick Nurse after the latest playoff disaster

The Sixers are not short on talent. Tyrese Maxey is blossoming into a superstar. VJ Edgecombe has star potential. Joel Embiid and Paul George are future Hall of Famers. Philly needs more depth and better health, but this team should be making a playoff run every year.

There will be no shortage of interest if the 76ers dump Nurse. Fans are already rooting for Sam Cassell to get his first shot as an NBA head coach. Philly could go in several different directions, but they need someone who values depth and wants to develop young talent. Ideally, it should be a first time head coach that may prove to be a game-changer.

Nurse went 116-130 in his three years leading the Sixers. They were 6-11 in the playoffs under him. That is simply not good enough for the talent on their roster. Fans are ready for a new voice leading the team. It should happen after Sunday’s disastrous Game 4 in Philadelphia that resulted in a Knicks sweep.

The Philadelphia 76ers have work to do this offseason. Kelly Oubre Jr., Quentin Grimes, and Andre Drummond are heading toward free agency. The Sixers must bring them back or find replacements. Philly is projected to be over the salary cap with just ten players under contract. Daryl Morey will have to figure out the roster, and he should be searching for a new head coach capable of getting this team to the next level.

Fans were hyped after defeating the Celtics in seven games, but that quickly vanished. Now, the Sixers have more questions than answers. They have to move on from head coach Nick Nurse and improve their roster. How do they do that? All fans can do is stay tuned to find out.
